NEWS: This winter is the starting off as the worst winter for avalanche deaths in the United States in decades. Prior to this winter the worst winter in the modern era of recreational accidents (post 1950) was 2001-02 when 35 people died. By the end of January 2002, only 18 had died. Already this winter at least 27 have died in avalanches.
